I met Ben and Audrey in a bar where the three of us used to hang out in Menilmontant, a popular neighbourhood in Paris.
Ben was diagnosed with cancer. When I found out about it, I was struck by a profound feeling of injustice, a feeling that has always haunted my nights.
I suggested to photograph him throughout his treatment: at home under the supervision of Marcel (his black cat), at Saint Louis hospital, alone or with Audrey. Ben fought for two and a half years and finally won the battle against cancer with strength and dignity, right before his fortieth birthday.
